Episode One:
The Phantom Thief Comes With Notice!

The episode starts off with a little "preview" to the series, since it's the very first episode, and it starts a little after the very beginning of the storyline- Maron has been Kaitou Jeanne for about a month already!

At the beginning of the episode, there are a bunch of policemen chasing after a mysterious figure. The person escapes under the cover of night...

The next day, a girl named Maron is running late to gymnastics practice. As she enters, she gets a bunch of balls dumped on her head by her friend Miyako. Miyako's upset because Jeanne managed to steal and escape the police again last night, and takes out her frustration on Maron because she's already late. Maron isn't too happy about this, and gets into an arguement with her about following rules.

Another person enters and blows a shrill note on a flute. It's their teacher, Packelamao-sensei, who chides them because they should have "hearts like flowers" and asks who started the fight. Of course, they both point at each other, and Packelamao-sensei tosses them both out of practice. ^_^

Maron and Miyako walk home, still picking on each other, but since they live in the same apartment building (and right across each other!) then there's not much they can do about it! Miyako was about to say something when she notices Maron sadly pausing before her mailbox- and opening it, finding that there's no letter waiting inside. (I feel a lot like that when I'm checking my e-mail! ^^;;) To break the silence, Miyako resumes their playful arguement about rules, and punches a pile of boxes in frustration. And the pile of boxes falls down on both of them. Miyako starts yelling how it's against the rules to leave trash in the hallways, when another person suddenly picks her up by the arm and catches her. He apologizes for the mess, since he just moved in, and the girls are silent and blushing, 'cause this guy is really good-looking! (Cheryl-sama: *passes out on the floor in a pile of goo*) He flirts with Miyako a bit, saying he likes loud women, but that she's nicer when she's quiet. And he likes Maron too, because of the "good view" (her underwear is showing slightly).

Needless to say, Maron wasn't too happy about that.

Maron goes up to her apartment ranting about how that guy was such a jerk, and Miyako is silent with a dazed look on her face- looks like she's been completely charmed by the guy! Maron goes home and turns on the TV. A reporter is talking about a famous artist, Yujiro Yamakawa, whose paintings have been destroyed with black paint. The police don't know if the artist has some enemy who has been targeting his pictures in particular.

The screen shifts to Yamakawa in real life- he is destroying his own paintings! A greenish light follows the artist back to his own home, and turns into s small angel. She watches as Yamakawa struggles with some unseen force, begging it not to enter his soul, but loses, and he suddenly gets a scary look on his face and something that looks like fangs. (^^;; Okay, they're probably not really fangs, but they're still scary!) The angel is somewhat surprised, but suddenly creates a piece of paper and throws it inside. The demon-artist reads it: It is a notice card from Kaitou Jeanne, who says she will steal the beauty of his painting, "The Green Light", tomorrow evening at 8 PM. The angel then flies away, to a familiar-looking apartment- Maron's.

At home, Maron listens as the angel, Fin, tries to tell her about the artist. Maron doesn't seem that enthusiastic about the job, even though she's been a kaitou for about a month. Fin then explains that as the reincarnation of Jeanne d'Arc (Joan of Arc), she's the only one to seal demons in the war of God versus the Devil. Maron doesn't see how this involves her, and Fin says that if the demons remain free, then people's energy will go to the Devil, making him stronger, and everyone would eventually die.

Later, at Miyako's place, Maron is eating dinner with the Toudaji family (and with Fin perched on her head ^_^). Miyako is enthusiastic because she's got ideas how to trap Jeanne, and her father, who is the detective in charge of catching Jeanne, is surprised that she even found out that Jeanne sent another notice. Maron, of course, gives Fin a look, annoyed that the angel had sent out another notice without telling her about it first. Fin flutters over to Miyako's mother's shoulder, nodding in agreement when her mother tries to forbid Miyako from going to the intended crime scene. Of course, Miyako starts arguing vehemently about it, and her parents look like they're on the losing end of the battle. ^^;; Miyako says that she's got a special trap for Jeanne as well, but refuses to tell Maron or her father about it because it's a secret. ^_^

Back in Maron's room, Maron isn't very happy with Fin for sending the notice, and doesn't really want to do the job. The angel apologizes for sending the notice, and says its her job to find the demons so Jeanne could seal them. Maron remains curled up on her bed, and Fin says that she has to do this because she's still an unofficial angel (juntenshi- sub-angel) and if she succeeds in helping Jeanne, then God will promote her to a full angel (seitenshi) (*1). Then she takes a bit more devious tactic- if the demons take over the world, then everyone will die, even Miyako and her family. Maron whispers that she'd be left all alone, and Fin says that that's what will happen without Jeanne. Maron suddenly gets up, enthusiastic and cheery again, and says she'll do it.

The next night, at the artist's house, the police are patrolling and setting traps. Miyako's father (whom most refer to as Toudaji- family name) checks in with his squad (Harukawa, Natsuda, Akita, and Fuyuta), then accuses them of telling Miyako about the notice. (the radio sweatdrops ^_^) Miyako is enthusiastic about catching Jeanne.

Perched on a building some distance away, Maron is scouting out the grounds with a pair of binoculars. Fin "charges up" her Clare Petit (*2) by sending a beam of energy from the stone on her head, then Maron jumps off the building, transforming in the process. She prays to Jeanne d'Arc for her powers, then says, "Strong and Serious, Marvelous and Matchless, Energetic and Fearless!" It's a phrase that only has meaning to Maron/Jeanne (but not really needed), and when she lands, she's Kaitou Jeanne. She summons her Rebound Ball from the Clare Petit. Game Start! (*3)

Jeanne about to throw Fuyuta into the water Jeanne is sneaking in through the treetops, when she notices other pebbles on the ground in certain places. Knowing it's a trap (I have no idea HOW she knew, though), she flicked pebbles at the ones at the ground, causing these nets to rise up from the ground and startling the officers. Jeanne continues moving as the police shout the alarm, but manages to avoid/stop all the detectives and enter the building. (Miyako is frustrated but has a secret trap planned!) Jeanne speaks with Fin through the Clare Petit briefly, when she falls into a hole, but escapes it quickly. Miyako is annoyed that Jeanne escaped the pit, and her father's surprised because she planned it without him!

Miyako still has another trap planned, though, and radioes to check if "it" is ready. The detectives answer, and they watch as Jeanne enters a lit room. Moments later, and startled scream is heard, and the detectives (including Miyako and her father) all burst into the room, to find it- empty? But Jeanne drops down from the ceiling and pushes them into the center of the room, where this huge net appears from nowhere and leaves them hanging in mid-air. The detectives aren't too pleased, Miyako least of all.

Jeanne runs into another room, and the Clare Petit starts beeping as she enters the demon's presence. She begins with "Under the name of God..." when the artist-demon Yamakawa begins attacking her and eventually begins to strangle her. Jeanne begins thinking of the images that Fin described earlier- soulless people doomed because Jeanne failed to seal the demons- and with renewed strength, shouts, "I don't want to be alone!" and throws the artist across the room. Then she holds out Clare Petit, summoning a pin. "Under the name of God, You, demon, born in the dark.. I seal you here! Checkmate!" and throws the pin past the demon and into the painting. The artist/demon begins screaming in agony, but then the human passes out and all the energy is sucked into the pin. The white pin turns into a white chess piece (a pawn) and Jeanne catches it. Recovery complete! (*4)

Jeanne is escaping through the window, but Miyako won't give up- she unleashes her secret trap, Miyako Special, Part 1! A giant net shoots out after Jeanne, who is in mid-air. Jeanne looks worried for a moment, then perks up as she simply uses her Rebound Ball to drag the middle of the net outward, stopping the net. Miyako fumes in frustration as Jeanne gives a wink and says "Adieu!" (*5).

Somewhere else, someone is typing on a computer. The screen has a picture of Maron in her school uniform (with Miyako in the background ^_^). Of course, it's the handsome boy they ran into earlier! (Cheryl-sama: It's Ch- *gets buried by a giant CENSORED stamp* spoiler~...) He says that Kusakabe Maron is the one, and grins. (not evilly, not happily, more like... deviously? enigmatically?)

Preview: Miyako is still excited about that guy they met yesterday- he turns out to be in the same class as Miyako and Maron! The new student's name is Nagoya Chiaki, and he lives next door to Maron. (Poor Maron ^_~) Maron still doesn't like him very much especially since he's a big playboy- but she's got more important matters to deal with, like a little girl who's family is being torn apart by a demon! So, the next episode is: "The Target is the Family Bond?!".

Fin! (uh, as in, "finished!" not, "Fin Fish" (angel) ^_~)

Notes:

1: I don't think they really mentioned the hierarchy of angels/terms for them in this episode (there's a subber's note in episode 9 or so), but for more information about this & the angel hierarchy, see ...betrayal.... Of course, I would NOT go there if you don't want spoilers, especially since this is the first episode, too! ^_^

*2: They don't really name the Clare Petit (the round thing she carries around with her in both forms) until a little later, but it sounds a lot better than "the blinky thing". ^^;; Jeanne uses it to get her Rebound Ball, to get pins for checkmate, detect/track demons/possessed humans, and talk to Fin. I think she can use it in either form, but she mainly uses it to detect demons as Maron. Also, I think Fin "charges" it to transform with energy from the stone on her head, but Maron uses the rosary (cross) to actually transform.

*3: In the first episode(s) the translation is "Start the game!" but Jeanne is speaking in English, and you can clearly hear "Game startto!" (Game Start!) Sachi's changed the translation to "Game Start" in later episodes, so I'm using that now.

*4: She says "Kaishou kanryou"- I know for sure that "kanryou" means "(task) complete", and I think "kaishou" means "collection/recovery". I think there are a few places where the translation uses either one of these terms, and "collection" kind of confused me, 'cause I was thinking of "collection" as in a noun instead of a verb ^^;; So I used "recovery" instead...

*5: For those of you who don't know any French: Adieu = "bye!" or "see 'ya!" Sort of like saying "Ja!" or "Ciao!"

There were a few changes from their script, and I only changed them because they used different terms/spellings in the later episodes, so I assumed the later ones were "more correct".
